Origami | Flying paper butterflies
A variation on the paper aeroplane, this flying paper butterfly flutters like a butterfly when you launch it.
You will need:
- A sheet of plain paper (square)
- Paint
To make the square
Here’s an easy way to make a square from a sheet of A4 paper:
- Lay the sheet down, in landscape orientation.
- Fold the top right corner down to the bottom edge so that the right-hand edge is in line with it.
- Cut off the strip to the left that does not form part of the resultant triangle.
- Open up the triangle to reveal your square.
Instructions
- Your square of paper is divided into two triangles. Splatter paint on one side.
- Fold the paper over and press the wet side into the blank one to create a butterfly print.
- Leave to dry.
- Turn the square over so that the painted side is face down.
- With the triangle’s tip pointing up, fold the bottom half up, stopping 1 cm short of it.
- Fold back the top layer to divide the body and wing.
- Repeat for the other wing.
- Open out your butterfly.
- It’s ready to fly! Hold and throw like a paper aeroplane. It will flutter like a real butterfly.
